Hello. We’re live with another episode of Let’s Make a Comic Book and we’re rocking at SLI tonight. So I’m going to be pressing the buttons and posting. So we’ve got three great artists tonight. Three Veteran, let’s make a Comic Bookers. They were all in the season. One the blank episodes that we’ve got. Stu Thornton, Roseanna Lamb and Andrew Law. Thanks for coming in you guys. So let’s take a look at the page that was made last week by Chris Pitcan, Mel Briggs and Laura Smith. And we’ve got our new character, bitsy is in space doing some treaty cat stuff and Wild Space is, and we have the bitsy was designed by Alex Major, Peter Wilson and Nick May. So now we’ll do the picker layout thing. Oh, so it’s all randomised.

Stu Thornton (02:20):

Ed Kearsley (02:28):

To where you get started, we’ll have a chat with Andrew. You could tell us a bit about what you’ve got going on, what you’ve been drawing recently.

Andrew Law (07:06):
I’m working on a new comic. It’s 42 page fantasy Venture, starting to get prepared for Kickstarter. So we’re maybe 22nd of August, I hope to get to Kickstarter. I’ve got, let’s see, I’ve got pick here. You see that is the other screen sharing? Yep, yep.

Ed Kearsley (07:39):
That looks awesome.

Andrew Law (07:40):
So it’s called Slay Him, whispers of revenge, fire-Breathing, dragons, barbarians, wizards, majors Follows a Adventurer that was only one of his people that wasn’t born with magic. So he needs to thi items to sort of compensate for that sort of thing. And he got outcast by his people. So he’s out sort of for a revenge and in the process he runs across dragons and wizards and yeah, it should be fun. I’m not very good at explaining it, but yeah, lots of fire, lots of dragons, wizards, magic swords. It’s a dream come true that it’s gotten to this far. I’ve got fantastic help from a writer friend called Julian Barr who’s written some really great novels of his own and he’s really helped me get this to the stage where we’re almost finished the first issue. So yeah, 42 pages. It’s been a lot of work, but we’re nearing the end. Sweet.

Ed Kearsley (09:12):

I’ve really sort of come into my own with learning colours and I found a book that sort of taught it the way I could understand it. I struggled with it for a longest time and hopefully the colours will trans work out in print as well. They’ll come out just as vibrant, but yeah, pretty cool. I’m excited.

You really got to, I know I looked at a lot of reference for that and still couldn’t get it and then went diving through a lot of old comics to see who did it, could do it well and use a little bit of reference from this artist and that artist just to sort of get it so it looks, trying to make him look intimidating on the front cover. Yeah, I’m excited to finally get to the stage. Been a while since my last comic and I’m finally wrapped. I’m excited. Yeah,

Yeah, I worked at the newspapers for a lot of years so you learned how to work really quick into deadlines and I’ve got a really short attention span, so I like to get everything done really quickly. I may lose interest in a couple of minutes so let’s, let’s get everything down I can as quickly as possible. Basically what I’m doing here is we’re looking at, can you see it? Yeah,

Well, I was recently at not Acon a Comicon for my Little Stole, I’ve been doing a lot of tin tin commissions for those who dunno, I draw a lot of tin tin style art, basically just little caricatures or portraits of people and their little pets, mainly dogs. Just see if I can find something that I can show you. Probably present

I think I’m going to do some more sticker designs but possibly more tintin stuff if I can add that to my portfolio or to my table somehow. But yeah,

That’s from Chris who did the first panel. It’s Danger Jean, there’s Danny, Nolan, Emmanuel, that lovely blurry one from Dave Di and that one from Gillespie. It’s a really cool one. So Andrew’s got some the second one.

Andrew Law (18:29):
So I just thought we’ll do a long shot. The tentacles coming around the spaceship. I’m guessing it looks like he’s on a spaceship in space though. We’re just going to do a long shot and show a couple of moons and maybe sun over the other end. Give a sense of scale that he’s out there alone and some tentacle things coming at him. I’m not sure whether I want to put, might put a couple of eyes of the creature behind the spaceship. So you got the impression of you don’t quite see the creature yet and this is Mr. Little Cat sort of getting strangled by one of the tentacles up above the spaceship.

Ed Kearsley (19:37):
Oh cool. So now Ana can start your screen share’s gone too, Ana.

Rosanna Lam (19:47):
Oh yes, I’ll share it again. There we go.

Ed Kearsley (19:59):
We will have the look back at Stew’s, put some comments. That one where bitsy climbing the lad to the mic was adorable. That’s one of my favourite. And it’s, Andrew didn’t draw your raininess. A couple of people have or they’re drawn bit’s if you got on the first page, Laura Drew bit’s I thing

Andrew Law (20:37):
That could be Uranus and that could be Neptune. Logically I’m not going to be able to fit in as many moons as I want, but if it’s those planets, I think they’ve got rings. Don’t they have rings?

Ed Kearsley (20:55):
Satin? One of them does.

Andrew Law (20:58):
Satin does, but I think, I’m not quite sure, but Neptune or Uranus have got rings but you just can’t see them. I’m not sure.

Ed Kearsley (21:09):
So I forgot to mention that we picked the setting as space for this story.

Andrew Law (21:21):
Well the spaceship gave it away.

Ed Kearsley (21:30):

Andrew Law (21:32):

Ed Kearsley (21:36):
That’s a good tagline. Lots of moon and ring jokes. Haven’t seen the big comic. Where can I land a copy? The Bitsy comic is getting drawn right now in front of your eyes and we’re on page two, so you’ll have to wait until it’s done.

Andrew Law (21:58):
How many pages is this one?

Ed Kearsley (22:01):
It’d be 20 again. We’re going to try and get three people on every page as well. So it’ll be a couple more people than the last one.

Andrew Law (22:15):
There’ll be at least another 18 weeks until this is finished.

Ed Kearsley (22:18):
Yeah, so Stu, I could see some comic books in the background there.

Stu Thornton (22:31):
Yeah, it’s a shameless plug man. I’ve got my two, I dunno if you can see them here. My two issues of outlaw coming out the next two or three weeks, they’ll be released, all launched in July. So now I’ve got them just waiting for the printers to send me the rest of them and I’ll be launching a lot of them. So it’s been years in the making. Outlaw is a comic from the eighties. I used to love those comic books in the eighties, whether it be Marvel or even the old Aussie ones like Southern Squadron and whatever else. So I really tried that was, well probably even subconsciously my inspiration towards putting this together. But it’s a character who’s wanted by the authorities and hunted by the underworld with a bit of an influence of the Ned Kelly armour. But it’s set in modern day Aussie all printed in Australia, all created here, drawn, written a whole lot. So it’s really a hundred percent comic book. Two issues coming soon.

Ed Kearsley (23:50):
Excellent. We’ve got a comment from Shay says, I think I want to set myself a cartooning goal of being good enough to work on the next let’s make a comic book season. And I would say to that, that you are good enough to work on this one is we had a couple of writers and people that don’t consider themselves artists on last season and they did great. They did some really cool panels. So there’s no barrier to entry.

Stu Thornton (24:34):
Yeah, that’s like s he was telling me he couldn’t draw and he did some panels in the last one and they were really good. We did you pan it?

Andrew Law (24:44):

Ed Kearsley (25:44):
I was going to say it. Do whatever you want and then it’s up to them if they want to.

Andrew Law (25:50):
So how much copyright can we infringe? Can I draw a star destroyer in the background?

Ed Kearsley (25:58):
Yeah, one of the just about the only rule is no existing IP so you can make stuff up but you can’t have Batman holding the sort of thumb air in the background kind of deal.

Andrew Law (26:14):
Oh that rules out my desk star. There we go. Desk star.

Ed Kearsley (26:28):
Same be a fun way to monitor your progress. Doing one panel per book be certainly interesting. The solid geometric objects are so unforgiving to draw and that’s true. I find everything hard to draw.

Andrew Law (26:59):
It is. I hate drawing cities.

Ed Kearsley (27:08):
Yeah, cities can be a bit of a pain. Depends how much detail you want to get in.

Andrew Law (27:15):
Well I like my cities to be black with white squares as windows and that’s it

Stu Thornton (27:24):
Dude. So I’m so with you.

Ed Kearsley (27:28):
Get your perspective grid set up. So I usually like to do the try and get a bit more the Todd McFarland style with the lots of details which is still just lots of lines. And then you have to fill in some of the squares.

Stu Thornton (27:58):
Again, I don’t have the patience for that man. I’m a black box with white windows sort of guy and you laugh, but it’s actually true. I’ve even used it in the outlaw comic actually.

Andrew Law (28:21):
Yeah, I’ve done a few.

Stu Thornton (28:24):
Oh as far as I’m concerned the Sydney’s not the reason, not the story. As long as it looks like a city and you can tell it’s a building then it’s not the hero of my piece.

Andrew Law (28:36):
Well if you’re adding ambiance to the in the back of the panel, it’s good. That’s all you need.

Stu Thornton (28:47):
Yeah,

Ed Kearsley (28:49):
What they say? You don’t have to draw the thing, you just have to draw an impression of the thing.

Yeah, there’s a reason I didn’t become an architect, although if I had a known back in school that all the architects were going to change over to computers a few years after I left school, I might’ve become an architect, but I was too busy drawing skulls and roses and guns and roses. Well I used to charge 20 cents for a photocopy of a drawing. I

Rosanna Lam (41:34):
Currently drawing in Photoshop, but sometimes I use Clip Studio.

Ed Kearsley (41:41):
And what about you? Yeah, Andrew.

Andrew Law (41:49):
I draw in Procreate I letter in clip Studio. But yeah, mainly procreate.

Ed Kearsley (42:03):

I use a prehistoric method.

Don’t tell me ancient

Stu Thornton (42:12):
Paper and pencil.

Andrew Law (42:16):
I thought that was extinct.

So what do you do when you get to the computer bit?

Stu Thornton (42:28):
Scan it in. I then put it through Photoshop and clean it up a bit. Then I’ll put it into Illustrator, colour it, then put it back into Photoshop, render it. So I give it some shadow and whatnot and then I’ll put it in the InDesign where I lay out my comic books. Yeah. So I’m using three programmes really. The Photoshop Illustrator and InDesign.

Ed Kearsley (42:58):
Wow. Ag says only use clip studio now but have reverted back to paper and pencil occasionally too.

I bought Clip Studio years ago and I tried to use it on the Wacom tablet, but it was older technology and just, I struggled with it. I bought it a couple of years ago because it was cheap and sat on the computer for ages and I’ve opened it up and used it for lettering because lettering is so easy on it. Procreate, it’s not really set up for lettering. You can do it, but it’s just, it takes time.

Ed Kearsley (46:42):

Andrew Law (53:03):
I picked up random things from news agents like most Australians did. Transformers number eight, a few Spider-Man here and there. My brother had old black and white JLA comics, so they’re always around. But it wasn’t until I think early twenties I walked into comic shop down Ham. It’s not there anymore, but Witch played, which Blade Number one and two with Michael Turner. It just absolutely blew me away and it’s been costing me money ever since.

Ed Kearsley (53:59):

Andrew Law (54:03):
Yeah, ham in Melbourne. There used to be a comic show, I dunno, I can’t remember the name of it. It used to be right next to the train station.

Ed Kearsley (54:10):
Yeah, I remember that one. There’s a card store across the road.

Andrew Law (54:15):
Oh, okay.

Ed Kearsley (54:16):
At one point, that’s where I got the max half issue, the Wizard issue.

Andrew Law (54:25):

I got that from that shopping shop.

Andrew Law (54:38):
I don’t remember most people, I know Linda Comics, they don’t remember it. It was a great little store. The staff were friendly. I spent way too much money on the Dollar Bargain bins of Image comics up the back. It used to send me broke. But yeah, it was after finding, there was a shop in Ringwood. There was a little store in there that I used to go to that had random, random comics. And every now and then I would get to there, but they didn’t have a huge selection like the one in c Shelton. Once I found the one in Chel, I was like, it was mind blowing. It really did start my, I could ever meet those guys again. I would say, yeah, I’d love to have a chat with ’em about the store. And

Ed Kearsley (55:53):
So was that Alternate Worlds in Ringwood?

Andrew Law (55:59):
No. Alternate Worlds opened the store in Ringwood recently a while back. But there was a store there before Alternate Worlds on Miranda Highway with a tiny little store. It was the size of the kitchen virtually. It was tiny, but it had some good stuff in there. And back when they were teenager we used to catch a train out to see friends out that way. So we’d always stop by.

Ed Kearsley (56:43):
Nice. So Ana, what was your first big comic?

Rosanna Lam (56:54):
I think it was a back girl comic. I remember it being a very, very vibrant art style. Actually, let me look it up. Yeah, it was Bat Girl of Burnside, the new 52 by Cameron Stewart, Brendan Fletcher, Bab, and Barwick. I just remember really enjoying it because I was at the high school or uni and it was about Bat Girl and how she’s trying to fit into the social norms and her being in, I think she was in a wheelchair in that one. It was like an alternate story or timeline or something. And she was in a wheelchair and yeah, I just remember it being so cool because she looked really cool as well.

Andrew Law (58:13):
Yeah, that one was in a school setting, wasn’t it?

Rosanna Lam (58:15):
Yeah, it was a school setting. So that’s probably why I remember it so much. It was very, very vibrant. And I was also studying at the same time, so I

She was partying a lot. I think I did a study on an art study on that specific comic, but Yeah’s that one, just looking through some images. Very nostalgic. Yeah, the front cover has her taking a selfie of herself.
