Ed Kearsley (00:54):
Hello. We’re live with another episode of Let’s Make a Comic Book and we’re rocking at SLI tonight. So I’m going to be pressing the buttons and posting. So we’ve got three great artists tonight. Three Veteran, let’s make a Comic Bookers. They were all in the season. One the blank episodes that we’ve got. Stu Thornton, Roseanna Lamb and Andrew Law. Thanks for coming in you guys. So let’s take a look at the page that was made last week by Chris Pitcan, Mel Briggs and Laura Smith. And we’ve got our new character, bitsy is in space doing some treaty cat stuff and Wild Space is, and we have the bitsy was designed by Alex Major, Peter Wilson and Nick May. So now we’ll do the picker layout thing. Oh, so it’s all randomised.

Stu Thornton (02:20):
This is high tech. That’s cool.

Ed Kearsley (02:28):
Do you guys get the nice three panels all stacked up? If I can get my screen to go back to where it was. So I’m going to find that and put it in the chat. Since we’re going, we’ll do the order. So we’ve got the hand of choosing and we’ll get Stu to pick first.

Stu Thornton (03:09):
Oh geez. Three.

Ed Kearsley (03:12):
Three is that’s the new special one. That’s the C for choose. So you get to choose which order you go in.

Stu Thornton (03:24):
Oh,

Stu Thornton (03:24):
Well so I get to choose a panel, correct?

Ed Kearsley (03:28):
Yeah. One, two, or three.

Stu Thornton (03:31):
I’ll go number one. I’ll kick it off.

Ed Kearsley (03:37):
Can pick a number?

Rosanna Lam (03:40):
Two.

Ed Kearsley (03:42):
Two. So you get three. So Andrew second and then Rose. We’re nearly there. Put that back up. I turned off my thing that had everything ready so I’m going put going to find the layout. I think it’s this one. Yep. Okay, so Stu is kicking it off.

Stu Thornton (04:31):
That is absolutely terrifying. I dunno why I was kicking one because I seriously, I’ll say to Ed earlier, I dunno what to do next. So I dunno why I did that but oh well. Here goes

Andrew Law (04:45):
I rip the bandaid off.

Stu Thornton (04:47):
Exactly. I’m just going to look at chats to get the dimensions and then I’m going to switch my phone around so you can see. So carry on without me for a second.

Ed Kearsley (04:55):
Yep. So you guys can download the stuff. We’ve got some comments. Carrie. This one for Stu, does that

Stu Thornton (05:16):
Have the dimensions on it? Ed? The JP Peggy centres

Ed Kearsley (05:20):
Should do,

Stu Thornton (05:22):
Yeah, I can’t see it.

Ed Kearsley (05:24):
Alright, lemme have a look. Yeah, it’s 7.5 by 13.3 centimetres, seven and a half centimetres up and 13.3 across is at the bottom. Is that a good

Andrew Law (05:45):
Resolution, that file?

Ed Kearsley (05:49):
Yeah, it should be.

Andrew Law (05:52):
Okay, cool. I’ll just open file.

Ed Kearsley (05:58):
Love that tick and good bits back.

Stu Thornton (06:07):
I’m back. Yeah, sorry man, I’m doing it all on my phone so it’s a bit of a pain in the, but I’m just going to switch it around so you can see my screen. What were the dimensions man?

Ed Kearsley (06:19):
It was 7.5 centimetres up and 15.3 centimetres across.

Stu Thornton (06:26):
Beautiful. Thank you. I’ll just switch my phone around and you can see what I’m doing.

Ed Kearsley (06:40):
Okay.

Stu Thornton (06:41):
Hopefully. Can you see my page guys? I can’t see what you see.

Ed Kearsley (06:48):
Yeah, we can see your hand.

Stu Thornton (06:50):
Yeah, see, really cool.

Ed Kearsley (06:54):
To where you get started, we’ll have a chat with Andrew. You could tell us a bit about what you’ve got going on, what you’ve been drawing recently.

Andrew Law (07:06):
I’m working on a new comic. It’s 42 page fantasy Venture, starting to get prepared for Kickstarter. So we’re maybe 22nd of August, I hope to get to Kickstarter. I’ve got, let’s see, I’ve got pick here. You see that is the other screen sharing? Yep, yep.

Ed Kearsley (07:39):
That looks awesome.

Andrew Law (07:40):
So it’s called Slay Him, whispers of revenge, fire-Breathing, dragons, barbarians, wizards, majors Follows a Adventurer that was only one of his people that wasn’t born with magic. So he needs to thi items to sort of compensate for that sort of thing. And he got outcast by his people. So he’s out sort of for a revenge and in the process he runs across dragons and wizards and yeah, it should be fun. I’m not very good at explaining it, but yeah, lots of fire, lots of dragons, wizards, magic swords. It’s a dream come true that it’s gotten to this far. I’ve got fantastic help from a writer friend called Julian Barr who’s written some really great novels of his own and he’s really helped me get this to the stage where we’re almost finished the first issue. So yeah, 42 pages. It’s been a lot of work, but we’re nearing the end. Sweet.

Ed Kearsley (09:12):
A chat message from Ian c Thomas saying Great cover Andrew.

Andrew Law (09:19):
Thanks Ian. Yeah, I really tried to put fire in it,

Ed Kearsley (09:25):
Great colour.

Andrew Law (09:29):
I’ve really sort of come into my own with learning colours and I found a book that sort of taught it the way I could understand it. I struggled with it for a longest time and hopefully the colours will trans work out in print as well. They’ll come out just as vibrant, but yeah, pretty cool. I’m excited.

Ed Kearsley (10:03):
Yeah, it looks great. Yeah, great figure drawing too.

Andrew Law (10:12):
It’s very hard to do that. Walking towards camera pose.

Ed Kearsley (10:15):
It’s

Andrew Law (10:18):
You really got to, I know I looked at a lot of reference for that and still couldn’t get it and then went diving through a lot of old comics to see who did it, could do it well and use a little bit of reference from this artist and that artist just to sort of get it so it looks, trying to make him look intimidating on the front cover. Yeah, I’m excited to finally get to the stage. Been a while since my last comic and I’m finally wrapped. I’m excited. Yeah,

Ed Kearsley (11:07):
Get another

Andrew Law (11:08):
Oh thanks. Ian from

Ed Kearsley (11:09):
Ian.

Andrew Law (11:13):
Ian’s a great artist in his own rope.

Ed Kearsley (11:16):
Oh cool.

Andrew Law (11:21):
Where’d he go? I had one of his old comics pinned up on the wall. I think it’s covered with, there’s a lot of mess here behind the computer covered up at the moment. But

Ed Kearsley (11:35):
That reminds me,

Andrew Law (11:35):
I still cherish that.

Ed Kearsley (11:38):
If anyone wants to be on the show, WW dot comics show slash interest and that’s if you want to be on the show or recent reads or drink and draw. There’s a dropdown menu I believe on the thing. And if you’ve got any banner out of bitsy or if you’re doing a submission thing for the drink and draw for whatever character they pick, you can send it to Comex show slash Art.

Andrew Law (12:18):
That drink and draw is always a lot of fun.

Ed Kearsley (12:20):
Yeah, drink and draw is great. We’ve got stews drawing along here. Can see Oh you’ve got bit down.

Stu Thornton (12:36):
Yeah, I worked at the newspapers for a lot of years so you learned how to work really quick into deadlines and I’ve got a really short attention span, so I like to get everything done really quickly. I may lose interest in a couple of minutes so let’s, let’s get everything down I can as quickly as possible. Basically what I’m doing here is we’re looking at, can you see it? Yeah,

Ed Kearsley (13:04):
I can see it looks like bitsy grabbed by the,

Stu Thornton (13:07):
Okay. Yeah, bitsy has now got the tentacles wrapped around her and she’s freaking out a bit. So whoever’s taking number two. I think that’s Ana is it?

Ed Kearsley (13:18):
It’s Andrew,

Stu Thornton (13:18):
Yeah. She’s freaking out being with tentacles. Get started. There’s

Ed Kearsley (13:31):
Andrew, get started on panel two. Well

Stu Thornton (13:35):
Andrew, Andrew is two, right. Sorry.

Andrew Law (13:39):
All good, all good.

Ed Kearsley (13:43):
And then we can have a chat with Sanna. Well Andrew and Stuart drawing. So Sanna, but have you been up to, what’s the latest hits?

Rosanna Lam (13:55):
Well, I was recently at not Acon a Comicon for my Little Stole, I’ve been doing a lot of tin tin commissions for those who dunno, I draw a lot of tin tin style art, basically just little caricatures or portraits of people and their little pets, mainly dogs. Just see if I can find something that I can show you. Probably present

Ed Kearsley (14:33):
It that be deceptively hard style to join that herge style of,

Rosanna Lam (14:40):
Yeah,

Ed Kearsley (14:41):
European

Rosanna Lam (14:41):
Clean. I mean it looks really simple but it’s actually, yeah, quite challenging at times. Can you see that there’s a recent Oh yeah, that’s I did, yeah. Can you see the other ones?

Ed Kearsley (15:08):
No, just that one.

Rosanna Lam (15:10):
No, just that one. Let me just do another share screen and can you see this one?

Ed Kearsley (15:24):
Yep.

Rosanna Lam (15:25):
Yeah, so

Ed Kearsley (15:27):
That’s really cool. Oh there you go.

Rosanna Lam (15:36):
Oh yes, that’s for that company. Yeah, so that’s what I’ve been working on and I’m also preparing for the Adelaide arcade, which is later in October just doing my normal prints and stuff like that. I think I’m going to do some more sticker designs but possibly more tintin stuff if I can add that to my portfolio or to my table somehow. But yeah,

Ed Kearsley (16:14):
You’ve got two comments. That’s amazing Anne and lovely clean style and super appealing.

Rosanna Lam (16:22):
Thank you.

Ed Kearsley (16:23):
They really nailed the feel of it, that style of artwork.

Ed Kearsley (16:36):
Really cool,

Ed Kearsley (16:37):
Really cool. Could see Andrew’s still doing his layouts, those screws going straight into the inks.

Stu Thornton (16:56):
Oh as I said, man showed attention span.

Ed Kearsley (17:04):
Well it helps with cartooning to be fast. Oh, it’s a dog. Yeah, it’s could show some, here’s some of the fan notes we previously got.

Rosanna Lam (17:36):
That’s neat.

Ed Kearsley (17:37):
That’s from Chris who did the first panel. It’s Danger Jean, there’s Danny, Nolan, Emmanuel, that lovely blurry one from Dave Di and that one from Gillespie. It’s a really cool one. So Andrew’s got some the second one.

Andrew Law (18:29):
So I just thought we’ll do a long shot. The tentacles coming around the spaceship. I’m guessing it looks like he’s on a spaceship in space though. We’re just going to do a long shot and show a couple of moons and maybe sun over the other end. Give a sense of scale that he’s out there alone and some tentacle things coming at him. I’m not sure whether I want to put, might put a couple of eyes of the creature behind the spaceship. So you got the impression of you don’t quite see the creature yet and this is Mr. Little Cat sort of getting strangled by one of the tentacles up above the spaceship.

Ed Kearsley (19:37):
Oh cool. So now Ana can start your screen share’s gone too, Ana.

Rosanna Lam (19:47):
Oh yes, I’ll share it again. There we go.

Ed Kearsley (19:59):
We will have the look back at Stew’s, put some comments. That one where bitsy climbing the lad to the mic was adorable. That’s one of my favourite. And it’s, Andrew didn’t draw your raininess. A couple of people have or they’re drawn bit’s if you got on the first page, Laura Drew bit’s I thing

Andrew Law (20:37):
That could be Uranus and that could be Neptune. Logically I’m not going to be able to fit in as many moons as I want, but if it’s those planets, I think they’ve got rings. Don’t they have rings?

Ed Kearsley (20:55):
Satin? One of them does.

Andrew Law (20:58):
Satin does, but I think, I’m not quite sure, but Neptune or Uranus have got rings but you just can’t see them. I’m not sure.

Ed Kearsley (21:09):
So I forgot to mention that we picked the setting as space for this story.

Andrew Law (21:21):
Well the spaceship gave it away.

Ed Kearsley (21:30):
I wish that comment up

Andrew Law (21:32):
In space. Nobody can hear you. Meow.

Ed Kearsley (21:36):
That’s a good tagline. Lots of moon and ring jokes. Haven’t seen the big comic. Where can I land a copy? The Bitsy comic is getting drawn right now in front of your eyes and we’re on page two, so you’ll have to wait until it’s done.

Andrew Law (21:58):
How many pages is this one?

Ed Kearsley (22:01):
It’d be 20 again. We’re going to try and get three people on every page as well. So it’ll be a couple more people than the last one.

Andrew Law (22:15):
There’ll be at least another 18 weeks until this is finished.

Ed Kearsley (22:18):
Yeah, so Stu, I could see some comic books in the background there.

Stu Thornton (22:31):
Yeah, it’s a shameless plug man. I’ve got my two, I dunno if you can see them here. My two issues of outlaw coming out the next two or three weeks, they’ll be released, all launched in July. So now I’ve got them just waiting for the printers to send me the rest of them and I’ll be launching a lot of them. So it’s been years in the making. Outlaw is a comic from the eighties. I used to love those comic books in the eighties, whether it be Marvel or even the old Aussie ones like Southern Squadron and whatever else. So I really tried that was, well probably even subconsciously my inspiration towards putting this together. But it’s a character who’s wanted by the authorities and hunted by the underworld with a bit of an influence of the Ned Kelly armour. But it’s set in modern day Aussie all printed in Australia, all created here, drawn, written a whole lot. So it’s really a hundred percent comic book. Two issues coming soon.

Ed Kearsley (23:50):
Excellent. We’ve got a comment from Shay says, I think I want to set myself a cartooning goal of being good enough to work on the next let’s make a comic book season. And I would say to that, that you are good enough to work on this one is we had a couple of writers and people that don’t consider themselves artists on last season and they did great. They did some really cool panels. So there’s no barrier to entry.

Stu Thornton (24:34):
Yeah, that’s like s he was telling me he couldn’t draw and he did some panels in the last one and they were really good. We did you pan it?

Andrew Law (24:44):
Yeah. Was a great dragon, wasn’t it?

Ed Kearsley (24:47):
Yeah

Ed Kearsley (24:47):
It was.

Ed Kearsley (24:48):
He did

Ed Kearsley (24:49):
The dragon. He in the dragon got some. I’m

Andrew Law (25:04):
More worried about drawing a really cool spaceship now.

Stu Thornton (25:10):
Yeah, you set yourself a high partfield.

Andrew Law (25:16):
Keep on thinking of Marvin the Martian.

Ed Kearsley (25:19):
Yeah, it’s definitely that fifties and sixties. So rocket ship. It’s looking good though.

Andrew Law (25:34):
I don’t want to make it too complicated just in case somebody else me to draw it.

Stu Thornton (25:42):
Yeah, go for complicated man.

Ed Kearsley (25:44):
I was going to say it. Do whatever you want and then it’s up to them if they want to.

Andrew Law (25:50):
So how much copyright can we infringe? Can I draw a star destroyer in the background?

Ed Kearsley (25:58):
Yeah, one of the just about the only rule is no existing IP so you can make stuff up but you can’t have Batman holding the sort of thumb air in the background kind of deal.

Andrew Law (26:14):
Oh that rules out my desk star. There we go. Desk star.

Ed Kearsley (26:28):
Same be a fun way to monitor your progress. Doing one panel per book be certainly interesting. The solid geometric objects are so unforgiving to draw and that’s true. I find everything hard to draw.

Andrew Law (26:59):
It is. I hate drawing cities.

Ed Kearsley (27:08):
Yeah, cities can be a bit of a pain. Depends how much detail you want to get in.

Andrew Law (27:15):
Well I like my cities to be black with white squares as windows and that’s it

Stu Thornton (27:24):
Dude. So I’m so with you.

Ed Kearsley (27:28):
Get your perspective grid set up. So I usually like to do the try and get a bit more the Todd McFarland style with the lots of details which is still just lots of lines. And then you have to fill in some of the squares.

Stu Thornton (27:58):
Again, I don’t have the patience for that man. I’m a black box with white windows sort of guy and you laugh, but it’s actually true. I’ve even used it in the outlaw comic actually.

Andrew Law (28:21):
Yeah, I’ve done a few.

Stu Thornton (28:24):
Oh as far as I’m concerned the Sydney’s not the reason, not the story. As long as it looks like a city and you can tell it’s a building then it’s not the hero of my piece.

Andrew Law (28:36):
Well if you’re adding ambiance to the in the back of the panel, it’s good. That’s all you need.

Stu Thornton (28:47):
Yeah,

Ed Kearsley (28:49):
What they say? You don’t have to draw the thing, you just have to draw an impression of the thing.

Andrew Law (28:56):
Yeah, there’s a reason I didn’t become an architect, although if I had a known back in school that all the architects were going to change over to computers a few years after I left school, I might’ve become an architect, but I was too busy drawing skulls and roses and guns and roses. End of the start of the nineties,

Ed Kearsley (29:32):
They would call that the good stuff.

Andrew Law (29:36):
Well I used to charge 20 cents for a photocopy of a drawing. I

Ed Kearsley (29:41):
Drawing

Andrew Law (29:45):
It get me at least one Mars bar every two or three weeks.

Ed Kearsley (29:55):
Let’s have a look at presenters drawing. Oh that looks awesome. This is a bitsy. And apparently there was some controversy over whether bitsy has a tail

Ed Kearsley (30:12):
Last

Ed Kearsley (30:12):
Week as well.

Ed Kearsley (30:16):
And

Stu Thornton (30:16):
What was the answer

Ed Kearsley (30:19):
As if you want bitsy to have a tail, then Itsy has a tail and if you don’t want to draw it then don’t draw it.

Stu Thornton (30:28):
Wow. Retractable tail. Cool.

Ed Kearsley (30:36):
As Alex Major didn’t draw it in the whatcha whatchamacallit. The character design.

Andrew Law (30:52):
I like how the scarf became the backpack with it. The exhaust on it.

Ed Kearsley (31:01):
Yeah. It’s one of the great mysteries of let’s make a comic book. Does bitsy have a tail and is it a scarf or is it an exhaust pipe?

Andrew Law (31:18):
Well you got to be careful with your tail near exhaust pipes.

Rosanna Lam (31:27):
My photoshop’s very slow because it’s streaming. I’ll do my best.

Ed Kearsley (31:35):
It’s looking cute.

Rosanna Lam (31:37):
This is supposed to be an I

Stu Thornton (31:42):
Damn because my phone’s turned around. I can’t actually see what you guys are doing.

Ed Kearsley (31:50):
It’s looking great.

Rosanna Lam (31:59):
Let’s see if I can

Ed Kearsley (32:02):
Comment from AJ Fitzgerald. It’s nice to watch other peeps process. I’ve been threatening to make a comic for years but still haven’t. Well now’s the time AJ and Nick maybe says a tailpipe.

Andrew Law (32:23):
Mr. Fitzgeral should. He’s a good artist. He’s a great artist.

Ed Kearsley (32:30):
And there’s no excuse gone crazy.

Stu Thornton (32:43):
What you mean gone. Stu was already crazy, man.

Ed Kearsley (32:51):
Yes.

Ed Kearsley (32:53):
That’s looking great. I

Andrew Law (32:54):
Think it’s an artist’s goal in life to be known as crazy.

Stu Thornton (33:00):
Well you’re not really an artist until, are you Ra? Really?

Andrew Law (33:06):
Not Vincent Van Gogh crazy but close enough. I want to keep my ears.

Ed Kearsley (33:16):
Okay, Chris saying, Ooh that show any metal. And Chris who did the first panel from last week’s show. So again, if anyone would like to be on the show, there’s Shay and aj. There’s the what you malic the link thing to fill out the little form there and send that to Siz and we’ll get you on the show. And also if you want to send any fan up for Bitsy or for drink and draw, that’s the link. There

Andrew Law (34:20):
Was a good topic.

Andrew Law (34:22):
Topic.

Stu Thornton (34:23):
Can you guys still see my screen?

Ed Kearsley (34:26):
What screen? Yeah.

Stu Thornton (34:28):
Oh, see what I’m doing?

Ed Kearsley (34:30):
Yeah, your hands wrote like right in centre of the shot. Oh,

Stu Thornton (34:35):
Jolly good, right?

Ed Kearsley (34:38):
Nick May saying Vincent van gone crazy.

Stu Thornton (34:52):
And if anyone knows crazy, it’s Nick May

Ed Kearsley (34:59):
And you can see what Andrew’s up to. The monster octopus is really coming together.

Andrew Law (35:17):
I’m trying to think what the headless look like.

Ed Kearsley (35:26):
We’ve got some confirmation from Rose. Oh there you

Andrew Law (35:33):
Go. There’s some reference.

Andrew Law (35:37):
Thank you.

Ed Kearsley (35:50):
Oh, are you guys going to have any dialogue in your panels?

Stu Thornton (35:57):
No one can hear you. Meow.

Ed Kearsley (36:02):
That was the little running joke in the first page. We got the two panels with the empty speech bubbles. They’re in space.

Stu Thornton (36:22):
I might put my speech bubbles in later actually.

Ed Kearsley (36:25):
Yep. Have you got an idea for what the dialogue’s going to be?

Stu Thornton (36:34):
It’ll be blank, but it’ll be a scream. It’ll be a scream like Ah, but you can’t hear it. So one of those jagged edge speech bubbles, if you know what I mean.

Ed Kearsley (36:48):
Yeah,

Stu Thornton (36:55):
These sort of lines I’ll put in later. This is just for reference at the moment, if you know what I mean. I’ll do that on computer.

Ed Kearsley (37:08):
And

Stu Thornton (37:08):
I stuff up this stuffed up this tentacle. Gee, I almost said testicle. I’ll stuff up this tentacle. You can’t say that on air. Geez. And I’ll have to fix that up later too, but that’s easy peasy. So how do I send it? I just send this to you ultimately. Do I normally I send it obviously, but send it to you man.

Ed Kearsley (37:41):
Yeah. Can send thing on Facebook. So we can do the mockup for there at the end of the show and then at the end you could still send the high res version tos.

Stu Thornton (38:01):
Yeah, right.

Ed Kearsley (38:08):
So you’re nearly done there, Stu.

Stu Thornton (38:10):
Yeah, man.

Ed Kearsley (38:12):
Nearly

Stu Thornton (38:12):
Done before I hit the computer, so

Ed Kearsley (38:15):
Yeah,

Stu Thornton (38:16):
Which I’ll have to do after the episode. Can you see the whole frame there? Whole

Ed Kearsley (38:22):
Panel nearly.

Stu Thornton (38:26):
Which way do you turn? Can’t

Ed Kearsley (38:28):
The left side, you move it up towards your coms. Yeah, there you go.

Stu Thornton (38:36):
How’s that?

Ed Kearsley (38:39):
Lovely. So

Stu Thornton (38:40):
I’ve got ’em wrapped in a tentacle, which will be fixed and basically we’ll be screaming like a mime Humphrey bee bear screaming, that sort of thing

Andrew Law (38:57):
Because this is a space octopus. I’m not limited by eight tentacles am I?

Ed Kearsley (39:03):
No, only limited your imagination.

Andrew Law (39:18):
Quite a,

Ed Kearsley (40:05):
It’s been a while since we had a comment to get some comments going from the chat. Have a look at Andrew’s room. It’s coming along nicely. So you’re going to fill the background in black?

Andrew Law (40:35):
Yeah, we’ll go black in the back and back and work.

Ed Kearsley (41:06):
So Stu, when you’re done to take a quick photo of your one and then you can send that to me on Messenger. And here’s a question from AJ Fitzgerald. Which programmes are you guys drawing with

Rosanna Lam (41:34):
Currently drawing in Photoshop, but sometimes I use Clip Studio.

Ed Kearsley (41:41):
And what about you? Yeah, Andrew.

Andrew Law (41:49):
I draw in Procreate I letter in clip Studio. But yeah, mainly procreate.

Ed Kearsley (42:03):
Nice. And

Stu Thornton (42:06):
I use a prehistoric method.

Andrew Law (42:10):
Don’t tell me ancient

Stu Thornton (42:12):
Paper and pencil.

Andrew Law (42:16):
I thought that was extinct.

Ed Kearsley (42:22):
So what do you do when you get to the computer bit?

Stu Thornton (42:28):
Scan it in. I then put it through Photoshop and clean it up a bit. Then I’ll put it into Illustrator, colour it, then put it back into Photoshop, render it. So I give it some shadow and whatnot and then I’ll put it in the InDesign where I lay out my comic books. Yeah. So I’m using three programmes really. The Photoshop Illustrator and InDesign.

Ed Kearsley (42:58):
Wow. Ag says only use clip studio now but have reverted back to paper and pencil occasionally too.

Stu Thornton (43:08):
Good on you, man.

Andrew Law (43:11):
I love it when they chance to draw paper

Ed Kearsley (43:17):
And Robbie says Save the trees, draw on a tablet.

Andrew Law (43:24):
She’s powered by dead trees.

Ed Kearsley (44:00):
Robbie says I say that, but I’m a college artist, so yeah.

Ed Kearsley (44:22):
What

Ed Kearsley (44:23):
Else is there? There’s the comics shop. I think it for all your Australian comic book goodies. There’s lots of good stuff there. We need Nick me to say something in the chat. I

Andrew Law (45:01):
I’s too busy trying to find Uranus.

Ed Kearsley (45:09):
Oh he wish. Shouldn’t work with his search. Oh he found a his M me bitsy drawing. Nick may design the legs of Bitsy too. So that’s a true fact. I’m the same AJ from Siz in the chat. So that would be to using Clip Studio.

Andrew Law (46:05):
I bought Clip Studio years ago and I tried to use it on the Wacom tablet, but it was older technology and just, I struggled with it. I bought it a couple of years ago because it was cheap and sat on the computer for ages and I’ve opened it up and used it for lettering because lettering is so easy on it. Procreate, it’s not really set up for lettering. You can do it, but it’s just, it takes time.

Ed Kearsley (46:42):
There you go. And Nick May comes through with Danny Wade. I just got in the car, had deploy over to make this comment. I don’t think it’s true. I don’t think they’d let Nick May Drive. Let me have a look. Once again, the show interest link is there if you want to be on this show or recent reads. And there’s the comics art submission link there if you want to do some bitsy fan art or if you want to get a drawing on the drink and draw show.

Andrew Law (48:35):
Yeah, quite a bit of art coming for that. It’s amazing. It’s pretty cool.

Ed Kearsley (48:44):
Except for drink and draw or for, yeah,

Andrew Law (48:47):
Yeah, the fan art that come in for pick some good topics and there’s a lot of contributors. Really cool to see a bit of a community there.

Ed Kearsley (49:08):
I got there. Wow. That moon surface is looking cool. It does look cool. So at this time of the show, what we normally do is have you guys send in a picture picture of your panel so far and then I’ll put it into a mockup of what the page is going to look like and then we can see what it’s going to look like before you guys do the final rendering. Send in the high resolution pick. So if you guys want to send through a JPEG or whatever. And Stu, if you are still there, send in a photo and I’ll get the page mock up. And if you’ve got any more comments or questions from the lovely people in the chat,

Stu Thornton (50:52):
Just give us five. I’m on my computer trying to download it and get it sent you, so just give us five.

Ed Kearsley (50:58):
Okay. Find,

Andrew Law (51:37):
So

Ed Kearsley (51:38):
This is the Yep, yep.

Andrew Law (51:43):
Just through Messenger.

Ed Kearsley (51:46):
Yeah, just send it on Facebook. This says the comics.net au slash store where you can get all your Australian comic book comics. So while I get that thing in my sorted about I Andrew, what was your first major comic book that you started following?

Andrew Law (53:03):
I picked up random things from news agents like most Australians did. Transformers number eight, a few Spider-Man here and there. My brother had old black and white JLA comics, so they’re always around. But it wasn’t until I think early twenties I walked into comic shop down Ham. It’s not there anymore, but Witch played, which Blade Number one and two with Michael Turner. It just absolutely blew me away and it’s been costing me money ever since.

Ed Kearsley (53:59):
Is that shouting him in Melbourne?

Andrew Law (54:03):
Yeah, ham in Melbourne. There used to be a comic show, I dunno, I can’t remember the name of it. It used to be right next to the train station.

Ed Kearsley (54:10):
Yeah, I remember that one. There’s a card store across the road.

Andrew Law (54:15):
Oh, okay.

Ed Kearsley (54:16):
At one point, that’s where I got the max half issue, the Wizard issue.

Andrew Law (54:25):
Oh nice.

Ed Kearsley (54:26):
I got that from that shopping shop.

Andrew Law (54:38):
I don’t remember most people, I know Linda Comics, they don’t remember it. It was a great little store. The staff were friendly. I spent way too much money on the Dollar Bargain bins of Image comics up the back. It used to send me broke. But yeah, it was after finding, there was a shop in Ringwood. There was a little store in there that I used to go to that had random, random comics. And every now and then I would get to there, but they didn’t have a huge selection like the one in c Shelton. Once I found the one in Chel, I was like, it was mind blowing. It really did start my, I could ever meet those guys again. I would say, yeah, I’d love to have a chat with ’em about the store. And

Ed Kearsley (55:53):
So was that Alternate Worlds in Ringwood?

Andrew Law (55:59):
No. Alternate Worlds opened the store in Ringwood recently a while back. But there was a store there before Alternate Worlds on Miranda Highway with a tiny little store. It was the size of the kitchen virtually. It was tiny, but it had some good stuff in there. And back when they were teenager we used to catch a train out to see friends out that way. So we’d always stop by.

Ed Kearsley (56:43):
Nice. So Ana, what was your first big comic?

Rosanna Lam (56:54):
I think it was a back girl comic. I remember it being a very, very vibrant art style. Actually, let me look it up. Yeah, it was Bat Girl of Burnside, the new 52 by Cameron Stewart, Brendan Fletcher, Bab, and Barwick. I just remember really enjoying it because I was at the high school or uni and it was about Bat Girl and how she’s trying to fit into the social norms and her being in, I think she was in a wheelchair in that one. It was like an alternate story or timeline or something. And she was in a wheelchair and yeah, I just remember it being so cool because she looked really cool as well.

Andrew Law (58:13):
Yeah, that one was in a school setting, wasn’t it?

Rosanna Lam (58:15):
Yeah, it was a school setting. So that’s probably why I remember it so much. It was very, very vibrant. And I was also studying at the same time, so I

Ed Kearsley (58:28):
Awesome.

Rosanna Lam (58:30):
She was partying a lot. I think I did a study on an art study on that specific comic, but Yeah’s that one, just looking through some images. Very nostalgic. Yeah, the front cover has her taking a selfie of herself.

Andrew Law (59:01):
Nice.

Ed Kearsley (59:04):
She got a and says Comic Sara, so it’s this in Ringwood run by the late, much missed Ian Gould. Was

Andrew Law (59:16):
That,

Ed Kearsley (59:17):
Was it Fox H to Z Mag? David Bird recently published a posthumus compilation of his music biography comics. Oh cool.

Andrew Law (59:31):
Yeah, yeah, it rings a bell.

Ed Kearsley (59:38):
All right, so I’ve got the page ready. We can have a look and here we go. So we’ve got Stews panel at the top.

Rosanna Lam (59:54):
Oh, that’s so cool.

Ed Kearsley (59:57):
So great shot of Bitsy. And then we’ve got the Epic space shot here from Andrew, the little monster or actually Joint Monster. And then we’ve got the Ana’s face-to-face meeting.

Stu Thornton (01:00:26):
That’s awesome.

Ed Kearsley (01:00:30):
That’s an excellent page. Alright, we’ve got Nick May backing it up that it was Oasis Comics in Ringwood.

Andrew Law (01:00:45):
Yeah, rings a bell

Ed Kearsley (01:00:50):
In saying the whole page. Looks fantastic. Does. All right, so that’ll do us for today. We’ve hit the hour mark. We’ve got three panels nearly done. We’ve got a wow from Nick, me, so thank Stu and Roanna and Andrew for coming in tonight and we made it

Andrew Law (01:01:16):
Through.

Ed Kearsley (01:01:19):
Oh awesome host from sis.

Stu Thornton (01:01:24):
We miss yous.

Ed Kearsley (01:01:28):
It’s much harder without sis. Next page is okay now. Hi. And albeit, that’s a good joke. All right, thanks for everyone who was on the show, everyone who watched, and we will be back next time with more bitsy in space. Bitsy the traded Cat Stew’s Outlaw comic is coming out

Stu Thornton (01:02:00):
Soon. Shameless plug. Shameless plug.

Ed Kearsley (01:02:07):
And keep an eye out for Andrew’s S what’s it called? SLE hem.

Andrew Law (01:02:17):
A made up word, but you know.

Ed Kearsley (01:02:19):
Yeah. Sounds cool. Alright, we’ve got some more comments. Thanks Ed Co. Thanks Ian watching and good job admin. Thanks Nick. All right, I’m going to play the video so we can go. Okay, bye. Thanks for watching everyone.

Andrew Law (01:02:34):
Bye.
